They did say, “not to take offense” on what foreigners may observe in this country. Filipinos like myself should not over react.
But why not? This is my Filipino food and this is my soapbox. We may not boast of caviar and foie gras, but with” I Would Rather Go Hungry than Eat Filipino ( Street ) Food Again” -it did sound as if Filipino food is hemlock. ( *sometimes though, when Filipino “foods” are brought to the condo, it could be lethal )
I Would Rather Go Hungry than Eat Filipino ( Street ) Food Again” just is not right.
But well, had the blog post been entitled differently, it would not attract readers or traffic. ( *Filipinos seem to be consistent with traffic by the way, whether on the net or along Edsa.)
Why else should one carelessly give her blog post that title, then add “street” later on, if the intention was really to inform and not just invite traffic. It is no different from those viral videos with titles that might say, “Mistress bludgeoned to death by wife”.
The blog post could have been better and honest if not for “that title” which made Filipino food or Filipino street food sound, like it is not edible. And besides as you go through the post, it was not as if, she ate in every karinderia or turo-turo –na bukas sa lahat ng gustong kumain.
It makes me unhappy that Filipino food was generalized that way –through that title. And all along, what she wanted to say was ” during her stay in my country, she was not able to find the best Filipino food anywhere, anytime.” I am not comfortable with, ” I’ would rather go hungry than eat Filipino food again “ when there are many Filipinos in my country, without food.
I guess, I am like most Filipinos, I am onion skinned, if that be the direct translation for balat sibuyas. I am balat sibuyas. Many Filipinos cannot afford sibuyas in the same way that I should not be balat sibuyas.
But beyond my being sensitive, the post was not a fair way of attracting readers.
For others who have tasted Filipino food and did not like it, I cannot force you. Neither could you force me to love everything you cook nor do I pretend to love all the food that other countries may present to me. Most importantly, I do not hastily type on my keyboard, I’d Rather...
(*have bad times with you than good times with someone else)
I love my pasta/spaghetti, -sweet with slices of hotdog. I love my ensaymada and my pan de sal. And most especially, I dip my bread in my coffee. For me, it taste better that way, for it comes with all my best memories as a child.
Taste will always be relative. ( *especially here in the Philippines we have lots of relatives and we eat Filipino food a lot )
Many people in this country, do not have the privilege to utter the words, ” I would rather go hungry than eat Filipino (street) food ” because they are hungry, they have nothing to eat and they live on streets.
In fact, many Filipinos may have not eaten Filipino food for the longest time. For those who’d rather go hungry than eat Filipino (street) food, I hope you’d at least give them away to a Filipino here in Tondo or Leyte, who would rather want it. Oh well, this is me. I am awfully sensitive.
Too bad that the Filipino travel/food experience of the I’ d rather girl was unpleasant. But I hope, she thought of how she made Filipino food sound, just by that one title. Imagine having to starve rather than eat Filipino food? Now, that is careless writing.
But because I am Filipino, born with a sense of humor through the Filipino food that I eat, I hope that she can visit again. So that her experience with Filipino food would not be limited to just barbecue and I’d Rather.
I can offer her dried fish, though. ( *whether she may like it or not, at least her experience would not be too limited ) It is Filipino food, a product of the hard work of people, of a culture and of a nation.
Again, I love my Filipino (street) food.
Filipino food.
Foods sa condo.
Food I grew up with and food my mother cooked for me.
Well said, Anj!
Thanks Grace! Mangape ‘ta diha nimo!
Although, she don’t like what experience she had eaten but not to extent of generalize coz I grow up eating such FILIPINO (street)food. Anyway, as well said ate Anjie but she’s very annoying. If she has time to spend with us, we’ll let her to taste the food we eat as above you mention…ug bahala na siya kung ganahan ba sya or dili.
Kay ako pud, magpadayon mukaon sa atong pagkaong Pinoy!
Thank You Bry. Bitaw kalami ra sa Filipino Food. She made it sound nga luod ra gyud.
Maybe you have the point Ate Anjie kay ako pud in my first impression to other nationality that I have work with there in middle east…LOOD GYUD ANG ITSURA SA ILANG PAGKAON!
But good for us kay dili ta ingana ug batasan para mo.ingon nga I’d rather to be hungry than to eat…….!
Nakakagutom na post! Ang sasarap ng “foods” lol Its her lost! i doubt natikman niya ni isa sa pinost mo sa taas!
