Si Sir Chief (Mate)

 

 

The life of a sea farer is never easy. He may be earning more, than what a regular Filipino worker in the Philippines would make. He may be contributing greatly to the country’s economy. However, he is faced with one of the toughest impediment known to the human psyche. And it is not even a struggle brought about by the perilous voyage across the Atlantic, nor the laborious work on board.

But it is having to endure the battle of homesickness. It is hard enough, thinking of those lonely months, spent away from his family and love ones. It is an even harder ordeal to accept, that he had missed important milestones of his family’s lives. Adding to that, would be having to regret terribly, that he may never witness those events again.

But despite all those heartaches, a seafarer perseveres -a Filipino Sailor, in fact.

It is because, this challenging occupation is held by many of our kababayans, courageous Filipino men who we pertain to as,” mga seaman. “

We as a nation can proudly say,
that many ship owners of various nationalities entrust their shipping vessels to our seafarers.

” According to an article in OFWGuide.com Salary Guide for Filipino Seamen one out of every five seamen in the world is a Filipino. ”
” The Philippines is one of the primary source of seamen in the global shipping and transport market.”

Moreover, I could also proudly say, that my sister is married to one of these few courageous ones. It is an honor to have a hardworking man in our family:

And because he is my brother-in-law, he occupies a generous space in my heart
and also in this blog. Therefore, I took the liberty of sharing with all of you, ( from his facebook post ) a piece of his mind; a condensed and edited version of one of his beautiful writings.

I saw their lives as sailors, through his poem; it left me misty eyed. May it open our eyes, to the hardships our seafarers endured.

May it make families appreciate their seaman-fathers, brothers and relatives more.

May students, whose tuition fees come from the hardship of a seaman’s labor, strive harder and become successful individuals too.

May wives save enough from the income sent to them, so their retiring seaman-husbands will have a beautiful future to come back to.

May we be grateful as a people that our kababayans generate income for our country.

May everything be all worth the hardwork that our seafarers rendered at sea.

Si Sir Chief (Mate)

Umpisa na ng araw ko
bago mag umaga,
ng alas- kwatro.

Mata ko’y maga pa,
ngunit kailangang
umpisahan na.

Nag-mamaniobra ng barko,
ng ‘di bumangga’t
makarating tayo,

Sa oras na gayon,
ako lang ang gising.

Kaligtasan ng lahat
sa ‘kin nakasalalay.

Bago matapos ang pagwagwardya,
darating na si maestro amo.

Hinihingi sa akin
ang mga trabaho
sa araw na ito.

Ibinibigay lang, kung ano ang kaya.
Para maiwasan ang trahedya
at disgrasya.

Pagdating ng alas-otso,
tapos na pagwagwardya ko.
Akala ko’y pahinga na.
Subalit, kailangan pang iutos
iba’t ibang trabaho.

Pagkatapos ng agahan,
kailangan sumilip sa kubyerta
Naglalaro ang mga daga,
habang mga mata ng pusa’y wala.

Lahat ng ginawa at ipapagawa
ay nakatara at i-rereport ko pa.
Kahit sabihin mo, ito’y sobra na
at nakaka-bangungot pa.

Mga paa at tuhod ko’y dapat maging malakas.
May kumpanyang naghihintay,
hindi puedeng isabukas.

Maayos na kubyerta
at gamit pang emerhensiya,
isama mo pa ang pangu-ngolekta
ng sari-saring basura.

Isa sa pinaka-importanteng trabaho ko,
ay ang pag-karga o dis-karga
ng mga kargamento.

Sa aking mga kamay,
nakasalalay
kinikita ng barko.

Dito maraming sumusuko
sapagkat ito’y delikado.
Isipa’y dapat may laman
at puso’y buong-buo.

Lahat ng kaalaman at husay
dito’y ibinibigay.
Malakas kailangan,
ang katawan at isipan.

Pag nasa barko
himbing na tulog, hindi uso
Nananaginip man o gising,
alam ko,
kung barko’y maayos pa ring
lumulutang.

Kami lang mga marino
sa PRC,
– ang may pang internasyonal na lisensya.
Kaya laging isina sa puso:
‘wag gumawa ng bawal
upang hindi maisakdal.

Kita naming dolyar,
kailan man,
hindi namin dapat abusuhin.
Sapagkat may kasabihan,
“Kung may itinanim, may aanihin”.

Mataas man na antas
bilang marino,
maaring na abot namin,
wala pa rin tigil sa pag aaral o
kahit sa tuwing bakasyon nito.

Akala nila pag seaman
maraming pera.
Training na napakarami,
minsan kapos kami.

Subalit, mga training kailangan
kahit minsa’y kawawa,
sadyang
wala talagang magawa.

Minsan pa‘y,
ginagawang palagatasan,
kaming
” mga sea man “.

Ang mahalaga ay
naisiguradong lahat
ay ginawa ng tama.
nakadepende kaligtasan ng barko
at mga pasahero.

Lagi ko ding
ipinagdadasal sa ating
Diyos Ama
kaligtasan ko
sapagkat
naghihintay pamilya ko.

Sa aking mga anak at asawa,
huwag kalimutan sana
kalahati man ng mundo
ang distansya
ng padre de pamilya n’yo,

Ilang dagat man ang layo,
kayo ang inspirasyon ko,
kaya’t naglalayag ako.

Kinabukasan niyo,
ang laging nasa isipan ko.

Malimit pa’y ‘di nakakadalo.

Sa mga mahalagang okasyon,

tulad ng pasko
at pagtatapos ni bunso.

‘Di abot tanaw man
at nasa malayo,
mananatiling tapat sa inyo,
pamilya ko.

Tapat na puso
at isipa’y laging nasa inyo.
Tuwing paglisan sa inang bayang,
bitbit ko ang karangalan.

Mabigat man na damdamin
at mga mata’y lumuluha,
sa mahal sa buhay mawawalay,
ilang buwan ding magkahiwalay.

Trabaho’y tapat
na itinataguyod
alintana samut saring
pagod.

Malahiganteng alon,
malakas na bagyo,
minsa’y tumatagilid na
ang aming barko.

Hindi maitago,
nangangatog nang tutuo,
ang mga tuhod ko.

Subalit sa tubig kami
kumakahig,
para pamilya’y
makatuka.

Mahal naming kababayan,
kami’y ipagdasal
lagi sa Poong Maykapal.

Kami’y inyong pakinggan,
ginagawa namin ang ‘di pangkaraniwan
para makatulong din sa ating
inang bayan.

Pawis at dugo namin
kung tumulo man
ay di n’yo alam.
Basta’t bayan umuusbong,
iyon ay inaasam.
