In the dictionary, Miriam means rebellious. It also meant, mistress of the sea. While in the old testament, it is the name of the sister of Moses and Aaron. (source:http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/miriam )
But for my husband and I -together with rest of the fans of Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago, MIRIAM would be:
Senator. Philippines. Politicians’ worst nightmare.
She is Miriam, The DEFENSOR.
Any blue-ribbon committee that she may be part of, literally becomes, a very BLUE ribbon committee for the guilty ones involved.
Any fact-finding board she sits with, becomes death row for erring public officials.
Any ad hoc investigating team, she may preside on, is hemlock to those liable.
The Senator never tolerated those who try, to confuse the public, with highfalutin legal terms and rules of court. She made sure the law was not being tampered upon.
Every time she appears on television -most especially when she admonishes a particular politician for coming to the committee unprepared, or when she insults a public official for trying hard to appear scholarly, my husband would say, “ANG TAPANG! “
I usually say, “Of course, si Miriam yan eh!’
To which my husband would say, ” Hindi, ang tapang ni, (insert name of politician here). Alam na nga niyang si Miriam ang makakaharap niya, ganyan pa kung mag sasasagot”.
Senator Miriam is brave, yes!
But corrupt politicians who face her, are even braver. How could they even think of facing her, unprepared or even try to muddle issues at hand? Or cross the Senator’s path, at all?
Maybe not brave, just plain stupid…is forever.
Everybody loves Miriam. (except her enemies, she says)
Her no-muss, no-fuss attitude has endeared her to many. But it is her sense of humor which truly captured our hearts.
So, when the book Stupid is Forever was launched, at The National Bookstore in Trinoma, everybody was there for her ( my husband and I, included ) to witness what they call, Miriam Magic.
It was just too bad though, that my husband and I, were not able to see the Senator in person. We had to fetch our son from school.
For the meantime, we settle for our pre-signed copy. Or, until the next opportunity comes around and we finally meet her.
We are thankful that we were able to get four copies, including the pre-signed one.
Plus, I want to thank her for having introduced hostile witness to my vocabulary. ( this was right after she told a certain Representative to go back to law school )
( although a long time ago in the nineties, in my Ilang-ilang dorm, I saw her in person )
The book is a treat, since it also includes excerpts from some of her popular speeches.
With this book, you may feel smarter, like her intelligence will rub on you. So, (hahaha) you are brighter, one hundred thirty pages later and “Ignorance can be cured, Stupid is Forever.”
Senator Miriam, she is forever, even her sickness feared her. God knows we still need her.

I’ve been on an online and offline respite for the last 3 months and only found out about this book now. I’ll be sure to grab a copy once I find my way to a bookstore.
